Midwater Trawls and Echosounding

by Wyatt Fournier

With our 3rd wire sensor installed we charged on, occupying up to 5 stations a day while also fishing mid- water trawls along the transect.  These mid-water trawls are used to verify the acoustic signal that Dave is observing on the ES60 EchoSounder.   This system is equipped with both 38 and 120Khz frequencies allowing him to differentiate between macro invertebrates and fish.  Dave has interpreted this image to be aggregations of fish forming at the bottom with a layer of krill above them.  We immediately turned around and trawled on this target to verify his observations.  To see what we caught, visit our facebook page:  www.facebook.com/GulfOfAlaskaProject
